MASTER CRAFTED IN SABAE, JAPAN BY THE LIGHT CO.
Our signature HAVEN eyewear collection combines modern craftsmanship with classic design and detailing. The collection is master crafted by the LIGHT Co. Founded in 2011, by industry veteran Tommy O’Gara, the LIGHT Co. is renowned for making some of the most exquisite glasses in the world. The collection is manufactured in Sabae, Japan, the world-renowned heart of the Japanese eyewear manufacturing. The history of eyewear manufacture in this mountainous region can be traced to the early 20th century, when it was established as a winter supplement to traditional farming. From then, the region gradually became the epicenter of Japanese eyewear production and now accounts for the overwhelming majority of the domestic production. Vital to the glasses of Sabae, are the highly skilled techniques of its master craftspeople. Countless artisans are active in Sabae, from young apprentices to experts with decades of experience. While the complex designs and delicate curves cannot be reproduced except through meticulous handcrafting techniques, the region is also renowned for its technical progression and cutting-edge technology.
OLD WORLD CRAFTSMANSHIP MEETS MODERN DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
The process begins with hand drawn sketches, ensuring an entirely unique and nuanced shape. From this flat 2-dimensional image, craftsmen use their extensive experience to render the image into a 3-dimensional form by creating custom mold. These molds are used to create a series of prototypes until the precise, desired shape is achieved. Every one of our frames is hand crafted from plant based cellulose acetates sourced from premium maker Takinom. Rather than a petrochemical acetate, common in lower quality frames, these cotton oil based acetates give the frames a deeper and richer colour and do not pollute the environment. Working alongside the LIGHT Co. we created a custom hexagon pattern that is engraved across the core wires in each arm as well as a durable and understated modern hinge design. Signature polished metal Hex beauty marks accent the front connections and side temples. The frames are cut, assembled, polished and comprehensively inspected and reviewed using a range of skilled hands and specialized machinery before being approved for sale.
SHIELD FRAMES
The Shield frames are inspired by standard issue US military S9 eyeglasses that were first introduced in the 1970’s. The glasses’ bold, unique, and often polarizing shape earned them the nickname BCG or “Birth Control” eyeglasses. Our rendition updates this iconic shape with a slightly oversized shape and clean lines. Each frame is hand crafted from plant based cellulose acetates and utilizing a Hexagon engraved repeat pattern on the core wires and modern hinge design. These details are concealed on the black frame and exposed on the Amber and Smoke frames. Our signature polished Hex beauty marks accent the front connections and side temples.
COAST FRAMES
The Coast frames are a modified interpretation on the timeless and elegant Wayfarer, combining modern craftsmanship with classic design and detailing. Each frame is hand crafted from plant based cellulose acetates and utilizing a Hexagon engraved repeat pattern on the core wires and modern hinge design. These details are concealed on the black frame and exposed on the Amber and Smoke frames. Our signature polished Hex beauty marks accent the front connections and side temples.
