HAVEN Field Testing Program
The HAVEN Field Testing Program is a new and continuous initiative launched this season with the goal of refining our products and showcasing our global network of friends, family and partners. Taking our products outside of the design studio and into a real world environment is an important part of our iterative process and ensures that our garments meet our rigorous standards of performance and comfort. Spanning a wide range of lifestyles and each with their own unique perspective, our first group of Field Testers will be evaluating our range of advanced GORE-TEX® products. After a period of field use, we will collect their feedback to inform future research, development and design.
To introduce the Field Testing Program, a photo exhibit will be on display at the HAVEN / GORE-TEX Los Angeles Pop-Up from November 18th to November 20th, located at 939 S. Santa Fe Avenue, Los Angeles, California.

Living in Copenhagen means that everything needs to work on a bicycle. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, having GORE-TEX as a daily choice is just standard. Copenhagen weather is exactly what I grew up with in Tacoma, Washington — wet, cold, windy. I need to be outside and I need to stay warm and dry, so my clothes need to fit the bill.

What role does functionality play in your lifestyle?
Living in NY, my main modes of transportation is by bike, train or walk … I don’t have the luxury to leave things in my car during the day, so everything I need for the day has to stay on me at all times. For instance the more pockets my clothing has helps eliminate having to carry a bag or choosing sophisticated materials will help keep me dry or cool. Apparel functionality helps me forget about the barriers that city life brings and allows me to focus on everything else happening.

A lot of things that are put out into this world focus primarily on aesthetics. They’re what catches our attention. But often we lose interest if it’s the primary driver of why something exists.
I like the idea of objects that fulfill both aesthetics and function. It’s not easy to achieve both a sense of form and function. So when you’re able to add thoughtful functionality, it’s a signal of intent from the creator to create a multi-faceted solution.
Functional, well-designed products that look great are more interesting cause of the extra challenges you have to overcome.

If I’m being honest, I’m pretty impractical when it comes to clothing. I’ve always favoured silhouette over functionality. My clothing always skews larger, not only as a style choice but for comfort. If an article of clothing I’m wearing has somewhere to put keys, phone and wallet - I’m good to go.

What role does functionality play in your lifestyle?
I’ve been buying jackets with some kind of technical capabilities since the late 1990s. But not what people celebrate as these vintage grails today (Arc’teryx, TNF) but new brands - Mandarina Duck, Maharishi and Polo Sport or DKNY performance. I guess it was more out of curiosity for a new style of jacket. Through meeting Errolson at ACRONYM® in the early 2000s I got introduced more to the “core” functional apparel segment of GORE-TEX and other fabrics. Once you get familiar with what these pieces offer — the comfort you get out of wearing a breathable, fully waterproof jacket for a full day in London, during a massive downpour — you would not want to wear anything else ever again. I get really annoyed these days when I notice something that doesn’t work (I start to sweat, wind comes through, etc.). I’m not the most hardcore outdoor enthusiast but I like to walk, bike and also take public transport. It is between these modes of transportation that clothing needs to work. I would like to see more than just shells and waterproof pants, I’d like to be able to wear a full system.

Functionality is super important to me. Definitely functionality over design aesthetic. I can get quite finicky with certain details like the positioning of a pocket, the type of zipper or how useful the garment is in general. I try to keep my material possessions to a minimum so whatever I choose to keep has to serve a functional purpose in my lifestyle.
